We found this landmark on Canal Street in the French Quarter, once home to the iconic and much loved Maison Blanche department store. This property is everything we expected of a Ritz-Carlton; oriental rugs, hardwood floors and Bulgari amenities – old world, luxury charm packaged up and exported across the globe. But in New Orleans, we found the hotel sympathetic to its location and architectural heritage – much of the property’s former grandeur is still evident, particularly on the ground floor.
What really stood out for us was the Southern hospitality we experienced from the property’s staff, who went out of the way to make our stay memorable and comfortable. In other Ritz-Carltons, the service can be a little on the ‘android’ side, but we particularly liked that the team here felt at liberty to engage with us in conversation; it was fantastic to interact with locals who had a real knowledge of and love for their city.
The hotel is located just a block from the commercial madness of Bourbon Street, which can be a little overwhelming, but at least guests step out onto a quiet street – a sanctuary enough for some and in the heart of the action for others.
