British, urban luxury comes to life at the Connaught, one of our five-star favourites in London. Stylish yet stately, the property has had a recent revamp making it all the more contemporary, but there is still an air of old-English sophistication – from butler service to antique furnishings, not to mention lashings of romance that practically seep through the walls of this century old building. We checked out the beautiful Terrace Penthouse with its outdoor space (rare for London) and follylike Prince’s Lodge, inspired by a middleeastern Peacock Palace, but our favourite suite is The Apartment, home from home, elegantly designed by David Collins – bathed in natural light during the day and offering stunning views of Mayfair. You’re not short of fine-dining options in the neighbourhood, but we recommend Hélène Darroze’s double Michelin starred cuisine served downstairs, or at least a pre-dinner Martini in the much talkedabout Connaught Bar, where white gloved mixologists shake and serve some tasty drinks. The highlight for us was the hotel spa, presented by the guys from Aman, the only in the UK. It is a world of serenity and tranquillity, the perfect tonic after a day out in the British capital.
