In answer to the competition from an increased number of modern boutique hotels, this stalwart of Singapore luxury has raised the bar once again. The Valley Wing of this infamous hotel is set in a tropical garden just off Orchard Road. With its own entrance (being chauffeured in is the done thing), designer lobby, restaurant and facilities, this hallowed hall is usually only walked by dignitaries, VIPs and A-list celebrities (David Beckham stayed here and had his hair cut in the hotel salon, a fact which the hotel’s management were understandably proud to point out).
As you’d expect, extravagance is the key word here. From your in-room check-in, to champagne on tap in the lobby, to the over-the-top décor, not to mention the harpist strumming away everywhere you are.
And whilst being gay is still illegal in Singapore, the government takes a ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ approach to it all and a developed, thriving scene exists in Chinatown, just a taxi-ride from the hotel. So slip in to the scene, well-oiled with your free champers, and out again into this wonderful hideout in the heart of the city.
