Rosewood’s signature on-point service is just one of the seductive charms of the super-luxe estate-style Rosewood Miramar Beach, which makes for an outstanding base for exploring genteel Montecito attractions such as sweeping beaches and picturesque winelands.

Arranged around the Manor House, a main building that radiates stately mansion vibes, Rosewood Miramar Beach brings together 161 rooms across super-luxe cottage bungalows, beachfront suites and private homes on an immaculate 16-acre site. White clapboard construction and manicured lawns conjure a forever-summer East Coast feel, making for an intriguing contrast with the backdrop of the dramatic Santa Ynez mountains, which glow like coals in the late afternoon light. Meanwhile, the Manor House’s sweeping, curved staircase invites Gone With The Wind fantasies.

Open since March 2019, the resort is the brainchild of Rick Caruso, the man behind LA’s luxury shopping centre, The Grove, and his concept is for the property to feel less hotel and more private home. And it can feel a little like your host means for you to never leave when you have two Insta-tastic, cabana-lined outdoor pools to choose from – one just for adults – an eclectic collection of some 600 artworks in the living room and no fewer than seven restaurants on site. Of these, Caruso’s al fresco, oceanfront dining on southern Italian dishes showcasing locally caught seafood is a must.

Expert pampering at the Forbes five-star-rated Sense spa, complete with a yoga studio and state-of-the-art indoor/outdoor fitness suite, is another signature experience, with unique treatments inspired by local surroundings and native traditions. And there’s even a selection of svelte designer boutiques on site, including an outpost of Gwyneth Paltrow’s goop brand. Our favourite feature? The cute, bubblegum-pink surf buggies on hand to chauffeur guests around the area.

Rising from humble beginnings, celebrated concert singer and Polish émigré Madame Ganna Walska bought the estate now known as Lotusland in 1941, and dedicated four decades to creating a dazzling array of gardens that today add up to one of the world’s most beautiful botanical parks. Its themed ‘plantscapes’ include Japanese, cacti and fern areas and can be visited between February and November.
