As we crawled along the seemingly endless driveway towards Nanteos Mansion, it was clear we were in for a treat. Perfectly manicured lawns surround a picture-perfect lake, that’s right, it has its own lake. But you’d expect nothing less from a 18th Century Grade-I listed mansion, now devoted to providing sumptuous accommodation and first class service for a select few guests.
We explored the 30 acres of grounds, a wonderful day off the grid, immersing ourselves in the local wildlife, and the property’s rich and interesting history.
Descending the grand staircase, portraits of former residents of the property (all minor royalty) glowered down at us – a veritable trip back in time.
The old-world grandeur is continued in the Nightingale Restaurant and Library Bar, where we were treated to an expansive selection of quality wine and ports. At our request, the waitress paired them with our dinner of perfectly cooked duck breast and locally-caught fish.
The star of the show, however, was the bed. A king-sized slice of heaven, it provided one of the deepest sleeps of our lives, much needed after a day of fresh country air and hearty British food.
