If the beds of a hotel give you an indication of what to expect from the rest of the property, Adelaide’s Mayfair Hotel has surely made some good choices: in its locally made and custom-designed beds (well, one bed!), we slept in utter comfort and luxury after spending the day discovering all the South Australian capital has to offer.
All parapets, gargoyles and ornate pillars, the shell of the Mayfair Hotel is a handsome, heritage-listed 170-room neo-Romanesque enclave in the heart of the city. Interior design throughout is gently Jazz Age, the lobby’s gleaming marble and dark wood palette echoed in the room’s sumptuous bathrooms, and rooms and suites are impeccably appointed with gloriously comfortable beds, custom-made locally.
The hotel does a great job walking the line between muscular corporate hospitality and relaxed boutique charm, offering two restaurants and a much-coveted compact rooftop bar, whose ‘no laptops’ rule we loved, and which hosts chilled DJ sets and premium people-watching. What’s not to love?

A stay at this elegant hotel puts you within easy walking distance of some of Adelaide’s top attractions, yet we found ourselves craving some nature and headed for the parks and riverside walks around the corner instead. With a soda or ice cream (or both) in hand, you could while away hours exploring the many landmarks, memorials and statues that make this part of town so worth exploring. |
