Design-heavy on the outside but barefoot in feel, Kantouni Beach Boutique Hotel is one of those typically blissful hideaways that come to mind when you think about the Greek archipelago. But the stylish property on Kalymnos’ west coast also makes for the perfect base if you’re looking to get active: from rock climbing to scuba diving, the staff can set it all up for you.
The Kantouni Beach Boutique is a rare find on an island that’s largely sticking to a cosy, traditional formula and brings a splash of Cycladic chic to the Dodecanese. Here the white and blue cuboid architecture typical of the Cyclades is sharpened up with crisp, modernist lines without losing the laid-back simplicity that the Greek islands are all about, while stirring in a cute, sunset-facing infinity pool bordered by a sleek wooden deck that almost kisses the Aegean.
The four-star property was fully renovated in 2020. Our spacious, sea-view ‘sunset suite’ was airy and sumptuously comfortable with minimalist décor. Locally inspired artworks graced the white-washed walls. We loved the luxurious bedlinens and our chic, almost industrial bathroom. But the real showstopper was the private terrace complete with a jacuzzi and panoramic sea views. Most evenings we found ourselves sipping glasses of divine Assyrtiko wine as we enjoyed a luxurious pre-dinner soak.
The hotel takes pride in its culinary offerings, and with good reason. The on-site poolside restaurant Kymata overlooks the beach and serves refined dishes that elevate traditional island flavours with Mediterranean and international influences. Fresh, locally sourced ingredients shine in every dish, accompanied by a curated list of regional wines. Breakfast is served here too and is a long, lazy and leisurely affair. There’s also a pool bar serving healthful juices, a wide range of snacks and signature cocktails all day.
For those, like us, drawn to adventure and nature, the hotel is a perfect base for exploring Kalymnos’ rugged landscapes. From rock-climbing excursions to leisurely hikes, the friendly team at the hotel tailored experiences for us that showcased the best of the island’s natural riches.

The thing to do around here is arguably to enjoy the great outdoors, and Kalymnos certainly doesn’t offer a scene like those you might know from Mykonos or Santorini. Should you catch a rainy day (or your legs are sore), the island’s 2009-opened Archaeological Museum offers valuable insights into its history. |
