A true Balearic beauty, Hotel de Mar Gran Meliá is an adults-only oasis of relaxation, elegance and hedonism in the Meliá brand’s home of Mallorca, and a member of Leading Hotels of the World. Set in the island’s serene neighbourhood of Illetas, the hotel is known as ‘the chocolate building’ due to its elegant tiling and unique design by leading Spanish architect José Antonio Coderch.
Discerning travellers are spoilt for choice in Mallorca, especially of late. But the Hotel de Mar Gran Meliá stands out among other luxury hotels on the island due to its unique blend of historical charm, modern sophistication, and exceptional service.
Firstly, it is located in the prestigious Illetas, an upscale neighbourhood many of the island’s elite call home. Housed in a building with historical significance, the hotel seamlessly integrates its storied past with contemporary luxury, offering a unique sense of place that few others can match. As an adult-only retreat, the hotel provides a peaceful, serene environment ideal for couples and individuals seeking a sophisticated escape, ensuring an elevated level of comfort, free from the bustle often associated with family-friendly resorts. These elements combine to make the Hotel de Mar Gran Meliá a standout destination for discerning travellers seeking an unparalleled blend of luxury, history, and personalised service in the beautiful setting of Mallorca.
We soaked up the Mediterranean vibes from the tranquil pool, whilst relaxing on plush Bali beds dotted throughout the Hotel de Mar’s verdant gardens. When we visited, the hotel had just launched an exclusive partnership with Italian fashion designer, Alberta Ferretti, to celebrate the property’s 60th anniversary as a landmark for the luxury travellers in the Mediterranean.
We came up close and personal with the designer’s Mediterranean flair, which she brought to the new Bombon Pool Club. Cabanas, umbrellas, loungers and the hotel’s secluded sandy cove have been adorned with Alberta Ferretti’s iconic tie-dye print, offering the jet set a truly elevated designer experience. New gastronomic experiences at the exclusive, stylish Bombón Pool Club extend to a signature cocktail creation by Alberta Ferretti herself.

Hotel de Mar Gran Meliá is just a short journey to cultural attractions including the Pilar i Joan Miró Museum and Marivent Royal Palace. It is also ten minutes by car to Puerto Portals and with its well-known golf clubs nearby. |
To further escape… we enjoyed the full-service Spa by Clarins, the perfect haven to unwind. It has its own indoor pool, hot tub, sauna and gym, and we took them up on their daily offer of complimentary yoga classes to ensure our days began with a dose of Mallorcan Zen.
Our suite offered a sea-facing view from an expansive private balcony (totally private owing to diagonally stepped accommodations). As we entered the suite, we were greeted by a light-filled space that exuded a serene and welcoming ambience. The décor is a symphony of soft neutrals and rich textures, with bespoke furnishings that echo Mallorcan artisanal heritage: sumptuous fabrics, sleek wood accents, and handcrafted details. Large windows framed breathtaking views of the sparkling Mediterranean and allowed the gentle sea breeze to infuse the room. The living area was an oasis of relaxation, featuring plush seating and curated art pieces that reflect the island’s cultural richness. High-tech amenities were seamlessly integrated, which ensured every modern convenience was at our fingertips.
There was a choice of three restaurants on the resort, including the all-day dining restaurant Amaro Bar & Lounge, where we took in the glamorous spirit of the 1950s. Its terrace, with gorgeous views of the Mediterranean Sea, is perfect for enjoying an exclusive array of light bites and tapas, international dishes, a tempting cocktail menu and music. Hotel de Mar Gran Meliá is a stand-out, upscale choice because of its sophisticated design, world-class amenities, and moreover, its personalised RedLevel service that elevates the entire guest experience. Additionally, the hotel’s commitment to showcasing local art and culture provides a deeply immersive connection to Mallorcan heritage, making it an exceptional retreat for those who appreciate refined elegance and bespoke experiences.
