With ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’ playing over and over in our heads, we journeyed to the Crystal Cove State Park to stay in the very beach cottage where the film was set. It was an enchanting, nostalgic step back in time: not only is it 30 years since the movie was shot, but these iconic cottages are steeped in the long heritage of the historic district of Newport Coast. The cottage – one of 24 on site – was built as part of a seaside colony between 1920 and 1940. Each has been painstakingly restored to preserve the charms of the original structure. Ours was right on the beach, while others overlook the Californian sea from a dramatic bluff. They are available to rent all year round.
