We don’t often gush over properties, but we were spoilt rotten by the magical Maroma, A Belmond Hotel. Situated on acres of private land, facing a stretch of pure white sand beach and turquoise Caribbean sea, this resort has it all to ensure that every escapist’s dreams come true.
A stunning casa and reception area at the Maroma, a Belmond Hotel, flows into a sea-facing terrace, dotted with deep blue cabanas that we just melted into. The food was delicious and kept us wanting more. A highlight was a romantic, moonlit dinner on the sand, complete with Mariachi singers. On another evening, a Cantina-style tasting feast, complete with tequila and mescal pairings (followed by a fabulous night dancing on the sand on the moonlit beach).
Throughout our stay, the resort’s team was beyond friendly – they go about their job like one big family. In fact, arriving and staying here felt just like we were right at home because of the people who work here, from Freddy in the bar who whips up some devilishly more-ish cocktails, to La Tia who makes stunning breakfast tortillas each morning.
Our gigantic suite was a piece of beautiful modern Mayan design: high ceilings, a private plunge pool and its own gym area – we even got lost in it one night, admittedly after the tequila-tasting experience. If you’re an early bird, or still up after all that distilled agave, our hot tip is to get up and watch the sunrise over the beach, it’s unforgettable.

The resort has a real focus on wellness linked to Mayan traditions and its Kinan Spa is a temple dedicated to holistic health – everything from yoga classes to quite possibly the best massages we’ve ever had. Look out for the spa’s bees, witch’s closet and pixie-house too. Book in as many treatments as you can here. We insist. |
