The historic town of Paphos boasts a vast array of historical sites to explore, but when it comes to luxury hotels, the Almyra is really the only game in town. Nestled in a picturesque fishing harbour right by the seafront, there is no better location on the island to experience genuine luxury, with the possible exception of its sister hotel right next door. But as a guest of Almyra you can use their amenities anyway. Bonus! At Ousorio, one of the four excellent restaurants, we sampled tasty mezze and local wine while a guitarist strummed traditional tunes. Here, at the foot of the main pool area, we bore witness to sunsets so mathematically perfect they could have been worked out by Euclid himself.
As a member of the global portfolio of aesthetically beautiful properties, Design Hotels, the rooms are reassuringly chic and modern with a Mediterranean twist. The sprawling lounge of our suite was open and inviting. By chance, we bumped into the interior designer, a Parisian woman, effortlessly cool and elegant in the way only French ladies can be. A moment in her presence gave ample explanation for the Almyra’s particular je ne sais quoi.
If you’re feeling active, there are tennis courts, a nearby golf course and two stunning pools. Or if you just want to feel healthy, the spa is a perfect oasis where you can sample treatments and cleansing juices, while an infinity pool stretches off to that perfect horizon.
