The Explorer is literally the flagship of two National Geographic exploration crafts sailing the Southern ice, equipped to safely navigate the polar waters and provide an exhilarating, up-close and personal style of exploration, just like Lars-Eric Lindblad did when he first opened up Antarctic eco-tourism back in the 1950s. These purpose-built ships are technologically advanced, luxurious and majestic; the Explorer is home to 148 guests, housed in ultimately safe, hotel-like surroundings despite being in one of the most remote, wildest places on the planet. This is really the adventurer’s equivalent of living the high life, because while the crux of the trip is to experience and explore the continent, we also dined sumptuously, kept fit in the fitness centre and enjoyed on-board spa-treatments after a day’s exploring – all in a relaxed, informal environment that’s very social and full of camaraderie. Overlaid on top are fantastic, NatGeo experiential options – opportunities to learn, engage and take the best you can from this unique, unbelievable journey.
