Enjoy Illinois:
Where diversity is in the ‘Middle of Everything’

THIS IS A DRAFT AND REQUIRES CLIENT APPROVAL – WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 27th 2024

Inclusion has always been at the core of the Illinois spirit. Just ask anyone from the bustling streets of Chicago, the historic charm of Galena, the capital pride of Springfield, or even along the iconic Route 66. Illinois cherishes togetherness, celebrates diversity and warmly welcomes everyone who visits.

Unsurprisingly, OutThere travellers, especially those from the LGBTQIA+ community, tell us they love Illinois. Travelling through the state is as much about its unique experiences, culture and spirit as it is about its iconic sights. With pioneering anti-discrimination laws that protect and uphold sexual orientation and gender identity, visitors can feel confident exploring everything Illinois offers – from its vibrant cities to its serene countryside.

The gateway city of Chicago sets the tone with its thriving LGBTQIA+ communities, iconic landmarks and electrifying arts scene, embodying what Illinois is all about: a place of industry, entrepreneurialism, and inspiration. Here, century-old architecture reaches both metaphorically and literally for the sky. Design influences every detail, legendary music genres were born, art thrives on the cutting edge, cuisine reflects agricultural excellence, and no one blinks an eye if you spend the week dressed head-to-toe in leather.

But beyond the Windy City, Illinois also invites you to discover charming towns and hidden gems, offering authentic culture, modern hospitality, and luxurious experiences – from boutique accommodations to elegant wineries. Its central location in the heart of the country ensures a little bit of everything… and a lot of it, too! What we love most about Illinois is that everyone can find a place to feel celebrated and inspired, all while soaking in the state’s signature open-hearted warmth.

Chicago: where diversity shines >

Chicago is home to one of the most vibrant and diverse LGBTQIA+ communities in the United States, renowned for its cultural richness, dynamic energy and inclusivity. At its heart lies Northalsted (formerly Boystown), the nation’s first officially recognised “gaybourhood.” This proud neighbourhood is famed for its lively nightlife, welcoming spaces and marquee events like the annual Pride Fest, which has celebrated freedom of expression since the Stonewall uprising in NYC in 1969. Each year, Chicago Pride draws nearly a million attendees, culminating in a spectacular four-mile Pride Parade featuring over 150 floats. Running alongside this celebration is the Back Lot Bash, an outdoor music festival and one of the most popular Pride events for women in the U.S.

In Northalsted, visitors can explore the Legacy Walk, the world’s only outdoor museum dedicated to LGBTQIA+ history and culture. Nearby, the AIDS Garden Chicago – a serene, 2.5-acre space along Lake Michigan – serves as the city’s first public monument commemorating the early days of the HIV epidemic and honouring those who continue the fight against the disease. The Center on Halsted, the Midwest’s most comprehensive LGBTQIA+ community centre, offers a welcoming space for connection, learning and celebration. Hosting art exhibitions, theatre performances and educational programs, the centre is a hub for queer culture and creativity and even boasts a fantastic rooftop garden. Northalsted Market Days, one of the largest street festivals in the country, rounds out the area’s vibrant offerings with a celebration of life and community.

For a more relaxed but equally queer-friendly vibe, Andersonville is a must-visit. This charming district features cosy cafes, boutique shopping and a strong sense of community. The Leather Archives & Museum (Chicago’s annual International Mr. Leather (IML) event has attracted global visitors since 1979), delves into the leather and kink scene’s rich history, celebrating freedom, brotherhood and expression. Literary enthusiasts can explore the Gerber/Hart Library & Archives, home to the Midwest’s largest circulating collection of LGBTQIA+ titles. Nearby, ‘Hollywood Beach’ (officially Kathy Osterman Beach) is a cherished summer spot where locals and visitors gather to relax, socialise and enjoy the scenic shores of Lake Michigan. Andersonville’s Midsommarfest, blending Swedish heritage with LGBTQIA+ pride, is another summer highlight.

And as the LGBTQIA+ community thrives, the love spreads into different areas. Beyond these iconic neighbourhoods, Uptown and Edgewater offer more beaches, jazz clubs, brunch spots and LGBTQIA+ bars. In South Shore and Pilsen, Chicago’s intersectional queer communities shine, celebrating artistic and cultural diversity. The Pride South Side Festival is a standout event, featuring music, art, local performances and a vibrant marketplace.

Chicago’s queer happenings extend beyond the summer months. Each fall since 1981, Reeling: The Chicago LGBTQ+ International Film Festival, has showcased the artistic contributions of LGBTQIA+ filmmakers, challenging stereotypes and educating audiences. October brings the Haunted Halsted Halloween Parade, complete with a dazzling costume contest, and December ‘heats things up’ with the Santa Speedo Run, where participants dash through Northalsted clad in festive hats, Speedos and bare, holiday cheer.

Whether it’s summer celebrations, cultural landmarks, or year-round events, Chicago offers authentic experiences that celebrate LGBTQIA+ identity, history and joy.

A state of Pride

The commitment to equality and celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community in Illinois ensures that every corner of the state shines with pride, extending far beyond Chicago’s iconic festivities. Across Illinois, vibrant LGBTQIA+ communities host Pride events and independent celebrations that reflect local charm and individuality, from spirited parades and parties in its other cities, like the Springfield Pride Fest, Rockford Pride Alley Party and the Aurora Pride Parade to more intimate gatherings and cultural festivals in charming towns, like Galena Pride Picnic and Woodstock PrideFest.
