Today is the 28th anniversary of World Oceans Day, the collaborative conservation project with a network of leaders in 140 countries worldwide. It provides the resources needed for people to take action in order to restore and continually protect the ocean. This year, the message is focused on calling on world leaders to protect 30% of our blue planet by 2030, 30×30. The idea is that by safeguarding at very least 30% of our ocean, through a network of highly protected areas we can preserve this amazing and diverse ecosystem for all.
So, it’s no wonder that our minds travel to Malta today, considered the world’s second-best dive destination (says its tourism authority – but of course, that really depends who you ask!).
In any case, it’s easy to see why the country would appear in the top spots, with its Mediterranean islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino offering up clean and clear blue seas filled with reefs, caverns and wrecks. Whether it’s the 35m deep statue of Jesus Christ standing in white sand near Qawra point, or it infamous Blue Hole, or for real undersea adventurers, the wreck of WWII British hunt-class destroyer HMS Southwold at Marsaskala, Malta won’t disappoint and its all just lying there in wait for those who appreciate the deep blue abyss to explore again.
