This cosy, family-owned boutique design hotel – the Baltazár Budapest – adds plenty of pizazz to Buda’s historic Castle District and has a strong lean to gastronomy. We’ve had the opportunity to enjoy the brand’s international outposts, so to experience the original was quite a treat.
We’d say that the Baltazár Budapest was more of a restaurant with rooms, but that didn’t make it any less of a hotel. With only 11 suites came a really intimate and friendly feel, not to mention an amazing team of attentive staff who just couldn’t do enough for us.
There’s was Kit Kemp-esque, bohemian eclectism throughout the property, which lent it bundles of contemporary character. Everywhere we turned, we were met by splashes of colour and emotion-evoking artwork.
In-room, the vibe was a little more pared back, yet there were still some quirks. We would have thought that with the old building it is set in, there would be a temptation to play into that old, four-poster, creaky floorboard design aesthetic … but no chance of that at the Baltazár Budapest. Our room was airy, light and open-plan, with a split-level bathroom. The layout clearly takes in the property’s eccentricities but delivered thoughtful and functional, modern comfort.

| Bring your notebook, so you can compare the hotel’s amazing restaurant to its contemporary sister restaurant of the same name at the Kempinski Estepona, in Spain. But despite its showy, big-city feel, don’t underestimate the foodie focus. The Zsidai family, who own it, have been leaders of the city’s culinary scene for over three decades. |
