The cheery Hotel Granvia Kyoto team met us at the platform as we stepped off the Shinkansen bullet trains at JR Kyoto station, to escort us personally to the hotel. After all, the property is connected to this entryway into the city. The sprawling hotel towers over Kyoto and from higher floors you can see all that the city has to offer – a 270-degree (yes, they’re that specific) view apparently – and train-spotters will love the station-facing rooms.
With 535 rooms and suites, the Hotel Granvia Kyoto is a gentle giant and a well-oiled machine, but we found the staff here were somewhat more attentive and friendly than those at the hotel’s sister property in Osaka… perhaps they’re more used to dealing with international guests here in this historic and well-visited city. Throughout our stay, the hospitality of the staff at Hotel Granvia Kyoto was exemplary. Their genuine warmth and dedication to ensuring a memorable experience enhanced our overall impression of the hotel.

| What makes the Hotel Granvia Kyoto special is its commitment to LGBTQ+ equality, it was among the first Japanese members to join the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association (IGLTA) and queer travellers will recognise the rainbow-flag pins that all hotel concierges wear to demonstrate their gay-welcoming stance. So if you’re all loved-up and visiting, why not take the hotel up on one of its same-gender wedding packages, or renew your vows in partnership with the progressive, 400-year-old Shunkoin temple with blessings from the temple’s chief priest. The hotel was the first ever property to offer this experience. |
As travellers from abroad, we found the Hotel Granvia Kyoto to be a solid mix of convenience and cultural immersion. It provides everything we’re used to and expect from the big-brand, multi-national chain, with a Japanese touch.
Our room’s design was a fusion of contemporary stylings and subtle, understated Japanese accents: sliding shoji screens and Japan-di functional and minimalist furnishings. It was very comfortable, although we didn’t spend a lot of time in it as we were mostly out exploring Kyoto. When we were in our room, what stood out was the panoramic view of the sweeping vistas of Kyoto’s skyline, including the iconic Kyoto Tower and surrounding mountains, which offered a breathtaking backdrop that enriched our experience of this historic city.
Dining at Hotel Granvia Kyoto is diverse. There are options that cater to every palate, from authentic kaiseki cuisine at Ukihashi to international delights at Fleuve. Each meal was delicious and delicately presented, complemented by impeccable service and attention to detail.
Exploring Kyoto from Hotel Granvia was effortless, thanks to its central location and proximity to key attractions. The hotel’s concierge provided invaluable recommendations for discovering hidden gems and experiencing Kyoto’s cultural treasures.
