If art and 20th-century minimalism are characteristic of Marfa, the Hotel Saint George personifies the town perfectly. After all, the independent property features hundreds of works by regional artists, from its common spaces to its 55 intimate guest suites; all set in a clean-lined, Carlos Jiminez reimagination of the original frontier-town hotel that welcomed cowboys and railroaders right up to 1929.
Our suite was beautifully appointed, straight out of a contemporary interior-design magazine – more like something you’d expect in Los Angeles rather than small-town Texas. The hotel was also certainly something of a social hub when we visited. Trendy-looking visitors from all around the world mixed with creative locals in the bright, airy lobby and infamous pool bar and terrace. The property’s restaurant, LaVenture (steered by celebrity Texan chef Allison Jenkins) offered delicious French-inspired dishes and, unlike most other Marfa establishments, provides a full meal service three times daily.
