Fosshotel, Reykjavik, Iceland

Fosshotel
Reykjavik, Iceland

Even in a town as walkable and easy to get around as Reykjavik, Iceland’s largest hotel, the stylish Fosshotel, is ideally situated. Towering above the other buildings in the business district, it even serves as a handy landmark to find your way back after a night out on the town. It’s but a short walk from the livelier parts of the city, with just enough distance that the street it’s located on is tranquil, with a spectacular view of the sea.

The 16-storey property has 320 rooms and, while large, the Fosshotel feels warm, welcoming and chic, with a boutique vibe. Haust, the main restaurant, serves a lavish breakfast buffet every morning. In the evening, the focus is on fresh Icelandic cuisine.

While you’re Out There
Check out Antiksalan across the street; it’s an old-world store selling antique furniture and trinkets from back when Iceland was part of Denmark.

We ate in the Beer Garden, cosy but cool and very reasonably priced for Reykjavik. It has a vast selection of craft beers, cocktails, plus traditional pub grub and snacks with a bit of fine-dining flair. It’s a great place to mix with locals and fellow travellers alike, although most were here for a short break rather than the trail we hiked, so we enjoyed story-swapping. There was live music in the venue and the atmosphere was warm and friendly.

If you’re looking to work off some of the local beer or train for the trek ahead, other hotel amenities include a 24-hour gym and, coming soon, a spa service perfect for winding down after.
